Caught somewhere between her stepmother and her godmother, a very young girl is trying to find her path in life. Each of the two women stand-in for the one who so cruelly lacks in her life: the mother, whose death begins the story of Cinderella. In order to reinvent the tale, Pommerat wished to create a play “about death, about life and about time passing.” His story begins when the dying mother speaks to her daughter, words that are almost inaudible and that Cinderella will not completely understand at first. Sometimes, mourning the loss of someone can stop time. Sometimes, the living feel weighed down by the dead, to the point where, under the burden, they risk collapsing themselves…How is the little orphan going to start living again as she tries to rid herself of the misunderstanding that so overwhelms her? With subtlety that doesn’t exclude a certain humor, Pommerat, for the third time, after Little Red Riding Hood and Pinocchio, tackles the serious and vital questions that haunt all of our childhoods.
