The story of Lucretia as it is generally understood, is that of a rape, the revenge of which led to the founding of the Roman Republic.  But Angelica Liddel adopts a completely different point of departure.  « In the beginning » the artist tells us « I wanted to talk about desire, the power that sex has over will, my intention was to try and understand Tarquin. »  As a consequence, the entire fable is reinvented : « I am writing as a poet and not as a woman.  What interests me are the various movements and convulsions of the mind. »  In Venice, she began by meeting twelve actors, « twelve Tarquins of boundless generosity », then some Ukrainian singers that she immediately included in her project.  And it was thus that the fates of Lucretia and Tarquin became radically transformed….
