Throughout the season, * a series of 8 meetings, will bring together artists, historians and performing arts researchers. These encounters will question the history of theatre, explore its margins and highlight its lesser-known areas.
An opportunity not only to (re)discover certain forgotten or little-studied aspects, but also to collectively rethink the way in which such a history is constructed.
Théâtre in Iran: the Shiraz Arts Festival
In this second series, researcher Azin Mohammadali will return to the history of the Shiraz Arts Festival.
Between 1967 and 1978, the Shiraz Arts Festival, held not far from the remains of Persia, brought together artists from all over the world. Its eleven editions featured troupes of Iranian Ta’azieh, Japanese nâtre, and major figures in Western theatre such as Jerzy Grotowski, Peter Brook and Robert Wilson. A veritable laboratory, the festival hosted unprecedented scenic and performative experiments, combining ancient theatrical traditions and contemporary avant-gardes.
.
Beneath this artistic effervescence lay a utopian project: a cultural program aiming at concord between nations, notably by promoting total freedom of expression. Reflecting the upheavals in Iran at the time, the festival gave rise to numerous disputes and controversies, provoking tensions between artists, political parties and religious authorities, before disappearing at the dawn of the Islamic revolution in 1979. »
