Summarize The Fan? Might as well try to track the trajectory of a butterfly, because Goldoni's three-act comedy is full of delightful whimsy and the lightness of spring. And just as a butterfly's wings can provoke a tempest, so can this fan. As it waves faster and faster, from hand to hand, the calm sky of mutual love grows dark with ever-threatening clouds. Everything returns to order when the fan finally reaches its destination; but its almost motionless journey across a small square in an Italian village, is enough for Goldoni to masterfully paint a society's portrait. For the tricentennial of Goldoni's birth, sixty years after the birth of the Piccolo Teatro in Milan and ten years after Giorgio Strehler's death, Luca Ronconi pays homage to his illustrious predecessor by performing the play which brought the master such triumphant success.
