Until recently, the Portuguese director Tiago Rodrigues had always considered Chekhov's final masterpiece as « a play about the end of things, about death and farewells » : after all, its plot revolves around the sale of an old family property and the sacrifice of an almost hundred-year-old orchard. But Rodrigues now sees it as a celebration of change, a whirlwind of creative destruction. In its midst stands Lyubov. This Cherry Orchard where she lost a son is practically a part of her soul. So why doesn't she do anything to prevent its being seized and auctioned away? Isabelle Huppert will play the part of Chekhov’s unforgettably « complex, extravagant and lunar » heroine, in a Cherry Orchard that should be, according to Rodrigues, a mirror of « our uncertain times ».
