“Behold, make way for the new king!” On the evening of Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States, Elfriede Jelinek set about writing her new work. But Am Königsweg is much more than a mere settling of scores between the Texan millionaire or self-proclaimed “stable genius”, and the Nobel prize-winning(2004) Austrian writer. It is a political work of our times. With all his various titles - champion, vanquisher, guide, conqueror, father, male, saviour or god - this latest sovereign’s actual name is of secondary importance. He embodies history of a millennial nature: authoritarianism, exclusion, violence, and averred hatred of thought of any kind. How or why has this part of history found its way back to us?. This is the question Jelinek asks, with humble perplexity and ample doses of self-derision. And how come we never saw it coming, “even though it wiped out so many millions and millions of us”? Right at the start of the show, we see the main speaker making her entrance in the form of a blind prophet, blood dripping from her mouth and eyes. She can see no better than Her vulgar Majesty, the reason being that all those participating in this game of massacre are equally blind, a game which alternates between music-hall and radio-crochet, obscene reality show and birthday party, lame freak show and Punch and Judy. Elfriede Jelinek’s enraged, poetic and burlesque review is brought to life in exultant fashion by Falk Richter’s baroque and provocative staging, in a production which hovers somewhere between horror film, peplum trash and comic book ode to the glory of a clown-like, super-Ubu. Truly terrifying.

Falk Richter est né à Hambourg en 1969 et y commence sa carrière en 1996, alors qu'il n'a pas encore achevé ses études théâtrales. Artiste associé à la Schaubühne (Berlin) de 1999 à 2017, il a également travaillé dans de nombreux théâtres à travers toute l'Europe, notamment à Francfort, Düsseldorf, Hambourg, Berlin, Zurich, Vienne, Oslo, Amsterdam, Strasbourg, Bruxelles, Venise ou Paris.
À ce jour, son œuvre dramatique (qui compte des titres tels que Dieu est un DJ, Electronic City, Sous la glace, Trust, My Secret Garden, Je suis Fassbinder) est traduite dans plus d’une trentaine de langues. Une dizaine de ces textes sont représentés en France par différentes compagnies au cours de la saison 2018-2019. L’œuvre de Falk Richter témoigne de son attention à l'actualité sociale et politique, dont il aborde les questionnements à travers un langage scénique combinant texte, musique et danse : une part de sa recherche se développe en effet en collaboration avec des chorégraphes tels qu'Anouk van Dijk van Dijk (Nothing hurts, Trust, Protect me, Ivresse, Complexity of belonging) ou Nir de Volff (Never Forever).
Falk Richter est aujourd'hui artiste associé au Deutsches SchauSpielHaus (Hambourg), où il a signé la création d’Am Königsweg. Invitée aux 55èmes Theatertreffen (Rencontres théâtrales) de Berlin en 2018, cette production a obtenu quatre des principales distinctions décernées par la revue Theater heute : metteur en scène de l’année, pièce de l’année, acteur de l’année (Benny Claessens) et meilleurs costumes. Falk Richter est également auteur associé au Théâtre national de Strasbourg où il a créé Je suis Fassbinder, en 2016. Il vient d'y créer I Am Europe (janvier 2019), spectacle qui sera présenté la saison prochaine à l'Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe.
