The Marquise has been in mourning for six months. Not far away, her neighbour the Chevalier has forsaken all hope of ever marrying his beloved. Both the widow and the desperate lover believe they have nothing to share but grief: a perfect starting point for comedy! As their two solitudes meet, they unwittingly set time into motion again. But time « is experienced by Marivaux’s characters as if they were living in an impromptu novel », according to Alain Françon. The transition from friendship to love is therefore never completely certain... Returning to a playwright that places « incredibly high trust in the cure through language », Françon, an outstanding director of actors, has selected a cast of young performers who breathe their youthful energy into the subtle, lively words of Marivaux.
