The tragedy written by a young 28-year old poet is famous for the string of impossible, unrequited, frustrated loves in which the characters are caught. But isn’t this engulfing dead end, asks Stéphane Braunschweig, linked to who they are: survivors, be they winners or losers, already devastated by the horror they went through — the Trojan war? He sees Andromaque as a post-traumatic play in which characters walk in blood, on the edge between resilience and the return of endless violence: Pyrrhus, son of Achilles, dreams of a total war, against his own side, to win Andromaque; Orestes, ambassador, has it for his mission to kill a child, heir of the throne of Troy; Hermione, Helena’s daughter, does not shy away from murder. After Pirandello’s As You Desire Me, a play haunted by World War I, Stéphane Braunschweig again puts on the stage identities destroyed by history.
