Prior to his encounter with Mephistopheles, Faust had already come face-to-face with outright evil, in the form of emptiness, the collapse of meaning, and the crisis of language. Romeo Castellucci brings us a re-write of this character from literature which has permeated western culture, by returning him to the enigma from where he came. Here, there is no longer any meaning, nor has there ever been. As the philosopher says: "we must experience the full weight of the darkness of our time", as Faust dared to do.
